I have an '84 F-250.
In the last 6 months, I have replaced the water pump, thermostat, guage controller and radiator hose.
It is -40 celcius today, and with no winter front, my truck is overheating. If I run it over 80km/hour for more than maybe 6 or 7 minutes, it starts to smell hot. doesnt take too long to cool down after i drop my speed, but at these temperatures it should be nowhere near overheating. most people cant even get their vehicles to run warm.
i've run out of ideas as to what could be wrong with the thing. any suggestions?
Is it actually overheating or are you seeing the effects on the guage? Carefully remove the radiator cap and insert a pencil thermometer and see what ya got.
i expect that the tsat is a ford part because the ford garage did it. i am seeing the effects on the guage for the most part, but if i let it go, it smells hot, so that would tell me that the guage is not the problem.
Two items can cause this, not enough antifreeze and the radiator is slushing not letting the water circulate, or a failing fan clutch.
I had electric fans on mine for a while and it would drive around town fine all winter with no fan at all. But hit the interstate and after about 10 miles at 50+ MPH and the engine temp was on the rise. Kick the fan on and it dropped right back down.
I have my stock fan back on now but it is not making enough noise while running fast, and my temp is climbing out on the interstate again. I am positive my fan clutch is toast causing the problem.
If I had an electric fan that was reliable I would leave that fuel sucking stock fan in my garage.
i wonder about the fan, because i can never tell if its actually running or not. i've been told that when it kicks in i'll know, but i havent noticed it yet. is there an easy way to tell if the clutch is bad?? i've got a couple spares, but i know they're a pain to change, so i'd like to know for sure before i do that.
If you do not hear it running it probably isn't. When mine was working right it would kick out at about 65 MPH and kick back in at about 55. You could definitely hear it kick out and in as the engine got a lot quieter when it was out.
i discovered mine was bad last summer, not because it was overheating but my a/c wasnt very cold.when i installed the a/c gauges they showed me that the air flow thru the condensor was slow, grabbed the clutch(engine off of course) and it spun like it crazy.replaced it and every thing was ok.
