On my 95 Lightning my temp gauge is not working correctly. It doesn't work then all the sudden it comes up seeming to work. I talked with the guy that owned the truck before me and he said it was acting up so he took it into the dealer to have the sending unit changed and they said it wasn't the problem so they reset the ecm and he said it hasn't worked right ever since. He changed the sending unit and I have, no change. The thing acts like its dead then after an hour or so of driving it seems to work but if you shut the truck off for even a second then restart it, it takes a while to come back up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...
Even though it may be a bit of a pain, I'd check the dash unit. It is not unheard of for the gauge to develop a short. With it acting up intermittantly, I'd sure be suspicious of it.
Thanks Mav, I was thinking the same thing. I was hoping someone had the same problem and it was in the recalibration of the ecm that something they did at the dealership screwed it up. I truely believe that is what has happened but talking with a dealership here in town they have no clue but did offer to find out what was wrong for $100.00 though. I'll have to check it out more when it gets warmer. Hey my buddies into Mavericks also his car is tubbed with a 6-71 blown 306 with a T-5.
I have sometimes had the terminal get just a bit crusty and loose good contact. It would go from not working to working just like you describe. Pull it off and slide it back on couple of times, that is usually enough to scrape up and clean the inside of the female plug.
You may even need to pinch it with a pair of pliers a bit to crimp the plug back some so it will grip tighter on the stud.
