Question First Oil Change

The 6.0 Owners Manual does not specify any maintenance until 7,500 miles -

On a new (gasoline) car I give it the first oil change around 500 miles, but what about the diesel?

This new F-250 Harley should be in my garage by the weekend and I will be taking care of it and keeping it in tip-top shape for as long as I have it, so what do you suggest I do first thing mechanical wise?

All advice appreciated!

P.S. This is my first diesel

Personally, I did my first one at 3,000 miles. This gives everything a chance to break in and "seat", but I felt that getting rid of the "building of the engine" residue and particals is just as important as well.

I changed my oil at 3,000 and again at 6,000 miles. Thereafter, I follow the 5,000 mile interval for severe service and 7,500 mile for normal service.

Make sure you either use the proper weight and "type" of oil as recommended or take to a "high-quality" Ford dealer with diesel engine experience.

Good luck... you will enjoy for many miles and years.

Thanks,

I had the dudes at the valvoline oil change place drain a few quarts out to see how it looked at 1,000 miles. No problem, so i put in new 15-40 to fill. Did it again at 2,000 mile and then at 3,000 miles and again at 4,000. The dudes said i was chillen and then i changed the filter and oil at 5,000 miles. so i guess in reality, if i took out 2 quarts at 1, 2 , 3 tand 4 thousand i replaced 8 quarts with fresh oil. When i changed it at 5,000 miles the oil was in very good shape. I DID NOT haul anything with the truck until i got 5,000 miles on it. Do not know if this is good or bad, i just was told not to by an old horse guy. rimshoes

Was that old horse mr Ed????

Hey if it works for you... then go for it.

The only problem I see is that adding in a few quarts here and there, it gets diluted with the other 8 - 12 quarts still in there.

To late now, you already did it. I would change oil and filter again on or before 5,000 miles just to make sure filter is trapping everything it can.

Good luck... you will enjoy the truck (except when parking at Walmart).

Thanks,

A mechanic friend of mine - not a diesel mechanic BTW - said to change the oil no later than every 5000 miles.

Of course the owners manual says you don't have to change a new motors' oil early. They designed and built the thing so I am taking their word for it.

Pocobueno,

Yes your right, but above you state "...I am takin there word for it."

Hey, these are the same guys that built this stinking motor with bad injectors (C94's) and can't get the programming right...

You know what, I believe "some" of what they say, but I still believe that changing the first and second oil changes early is the only way to go to rid your engine of break-in metals, casting materials and other contaminents when the engine was made.

Good luck,

Cruise,

Read my previous post above...

I changed at 3,000 miles and again at 6,000 miles (oil & filter).

Then I follow the manual of either 5,000 or 7,500 intervals. The manual does state... "on or before" these intervals. Due to the problems with these trucks (mine has not except for flashing issues) I do not want to give FMC any reason for deneying a warrenty claim.

Plus a diesel truck runs better with clean oil and fuel. Change fuel filters (2 od them) at or before 15,000 miles as stated by Ford.

Thanks,

Here is my take on it all

On the truck every 5,000 miles make checking the odometer for oil changes real easy

On the Mustang GT same as the truck

On the 87 t bird turbo, every 3,000 mile only because it is an older vehicle, has a four cylinder turbo and doesnt get that many miles on it

On the Harley every 2,500 miles but if it goes over that its no biggie because they recomend 5,000 and sometimes my road trips interfere with the 2,500 mile interval

On the John Deere lawn tractor, Before the first mow of the season and then again around mid august (it takes a toyota oil filter on a kawasaki engine.. go figure)

The snow blower gets an oil change before the first snow of the year.

Every thing else I have with an engine is a 2-stroke (chainsaw, weed wacker, leaf blower and the high speed drink blender I made from an old weed wacker engine)

Oh yeah the troy bulit 1980 model tiller.. humm my brother in law hasnt returned that in 4 years. gawd I hope he has change the oil

Thanks guys.

And Jeff, whenever I do an oil change I always change out the filter - is it not required at the first 3000 mile oil change? could it be harmful to change it at 3k and again at 6k, then follow the regular 5k schedule?

Regarding the post above...

As they say on TV....

1) Roger that

2) 10-4

3) Copy

4) Wilco

Good advice and I generally follow the same intervals as well, except I have a Lexus LS400 instead of a T-Bird. My John Deere is a 1988 430 diesel Garden tractor (22HP).

p.s. your brother will return your tools when they break... if they are still working why would he return them (ha, ha)?

Take care,

I change oil and filter (always).

The old/dirty oil in the filter is just that... old and dirty. You need to get rid of it as well and all filters go into "bypass" mode if they become clogged for ANY reason. The oil filter for the 6.0L PSD is on top and easy to change.

You want (and I recommend) changing oil & filter together at all times. I personally feel that the first 2 changes are the most critical due to the engine breaking in and the various parts getting to know each other.... like a fine women, you got to treat her nice and softly.... then work her like a work truck!!!

(Man, I hope my wife doesn't read this.... boy I am a tough talker when she isn't around!!)

Good luck,
