I have a 2000 f-150 7700 4WD. with 305's and get 12 MPG. I think the horse power is about 260. Ford is the only manufacturer presenting a high tech overhead cam aluminum heads ect. engine in a PU. I recently had a family member buy a 4 door Z-71 chevy PU. with 340 horses and is getting 16 miles per gallon. What are the other benifits of having a high tech engine other than not being able to change your owIn spark plugs and them blowing out. I really like the truck this is about my 7th in a row. But how in the world does chevy get such great performance out of their low tech engine?
the mod motors are very well built, the 5.4 head thing is a huge problem though.
The 4.6 motor will run literally forever and you don't have to open it up if you keep fresh oil in it.
If you are looking for more performance, then you need to spend a few dollars.
A computer tune is an excellent way to start with the mod motor.
The tune affects all aspects of the car, transmission operation, and timing of the engine, and more horsepower and better gas mileage.
The kicker is that if you want more power, you will end up adding timing at some point. When you add timing, you will need to prevent detonation by going to a premium fuel.
If you are willing to spend the extra couple bucks on premium then it will pay off greatly.
I haven't been thrilled with anything chevy has put out in the last 15 years, its all the same to me.
They keep it simple. That's why I'm going to build a windsor stroker with a lot of aftermarket goodies. Ever wonder why the 3 and 4 valve 5.4 makes the same hp? Which is only 40 more than the 2 valve. Overhead cams are overhyped.
