No matter what the flag meant in terms of history, the fact is, today, the "rebel flag" has been forever hijacked as a symbol of racism.
Certainly there are people who display the flag WHO ARE NOT RACISTS, but that's not what people assume when they see it - on the contrary, they assume the worst.
thats some of the best reasons i've heard, mabe i put a little to much thought in to something that... just looks cool.
i will say one thing this is the best civil war history leason i have ever had
I agree that alot of people think the flag stands for racism, but there's no logical reason for that. Those people are the ones who think the Civil War was fought to free the slaves, and don't realize that freeing the slaves was an afterthought once the north had won. And if the confederate flag does stand for racism, then the U.S. flag stands for segregation and hunting Indians.
Yeah the KKK used the Southern Cross as there flag of choice. But they also used the Stars and Bars.
All wars are fought over one thing as the root. Monetary power.
Chiefman hit the nail on the head.
And why is Jesse Jackson at the root of the problem but has never come up with a solution?
Until all the people who cry racism get rid of things like the Negro College Fund, BET, Miss Black America and so on they can go pound sand. Think of the reprucussions of a Whitey only college fund. They want equality but are swimming in hipocracy.
Originally posted by TLD The confederate flag stood for nothing more then the South's rights to own slaves PERIOD without that issue there would have never been a confedracy and no North / South Split. By the way the stars and stripes or the AMERICAN flag did not just stand for the Northern States in stood for all States until the South split and chose war over ending slavery.
Absolutely, completely, and totally false. Lincoln invaded for reasons having NOTHING to do with slavery--and said as much. The Emancipation Proclamation was a PR move to boost flagging support in the north.

That was the most despised act of Lincoln's presidency, especially in the North. It cannot possibly be viewed as only a PR move. It took great courage to issue it.
It probably didn't have the affect he'd hoped for, but it was, indeed, a PR move.
Lincoln should have been removed from office & thrown in prison. He single-handedly did more damage to the Constitution in 5 years than had been done in the previous 75.

It nearly cost him a second term. Are you arguing it was a mistake?

A war-time president has the power to suspend some parts of the Constitution. All rights were fully restored as soon as practicable. I believe he exercised that power judiciously.
The confederate flag to me stands for, the willingness to stand and fight against overwhelming odds for what you believe in, and nothing more. Heres a history question for some of you. HOW MANY SLAVE SHIPS WERE THERE THAT BROUGHT SLAVES OVER THAT FLEW THE CONFEDERATE FLAG??????? ZERO, ZIP, NADA, NOT ONE!!!! THEY FLEW EITHER THE STARS AND STRIPES OR ANOTHER NATIONS FLAG!
the issue was states rights period! the right to secceed, the right to avoid unfair taxation, the right to decide individually by state to legalize slavery, or not to keep it legal! so yes slavery was one of the states rights to decide. was it the whole reason for the civil war? NO! not even close!.just before lincoln wrote the emancipation proclomation,he is quoted as saying his main goal was to keep the union together,at all cost. LINCOLN ACTUALLY OFFERED LET THE STATES WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN SLAVE STATES TO REMAIN SLAVE STATES, JUST TO AVOID A SECCESSION. THOSE STATES STILL CHOSE TO SECCEED FROM THE UNION. SHORTLY AFTER THE SOUTHERN STATES REFUSED, LINCOLN WROTE THE E.P. TO GAIN PUBLIC AS WELL AS POLITICAL SUPPORT, BECAUSE WITHOUT IT HOW WOULD HE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIGHT A WAR!!
I HAVE JUST AS MUCH RIGHT TO FLY THAT FLAG WETHER IT OFFENDS ANYONE OR NOT, AS AFRICAN AMERICANS DO TO DISPLAY THEIR AFRICAN FLAG OR THEIR MALCOM X, OR ANY OTHER SYMBOL OR FLAG!
HERES ANOTHER ONE FOR YA!! WHY IS IT OKAY TO PROSECUTE 3 WHITE MEN IN NEW YORK FOR ASSAULT AND CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS FOR YELLING RACIAL SLURS AT 3 HISPANIC TEENS, BUT ITS OKAY FOR ME TO BE CALLED "CRACKER" "WHITEY" "TRAILER TRASH"!!!!! IF I TRIED TO PRESS CIVIL RIGHTS CHARGES I WOULD BE LAUGHED OUT OF COURT!

Exactly right. Should I stop flying the flag because it has been hijacked and is misunderstood by some? What if the Stars and Stripes was hijacked by some lunatic group does that mean I can't fly it because someone might take offense. Seems like some people have become professional offense takers and grudge holders, travelling the country trying to tell people in other states what to do. When the flag issue was actually put to a vote in Miss. which has a high black population they voted to keep the battle flag on their state flag. How could this be if it is so offensive to the descendants of slaves? People from the South fly the flag because it represents their history and heritage. People not from the South fly it as a symbol of non conformity and resistance to authority. Nowhere in our Constitution will you find a right to not be offended. If you are offended by something like a flag that is your problem, don't look at it.
Btw years of slavery under the Stars and Stripes-- 89yrs
years of slavery under the Confederate Flag-- 4yrs
If Lincoln was so concerned about slavery why is it the Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in the South over which he had NO CONTROL? Slavery remained legal in Deleware until after the war. It was a total ploy to fire up support for the war and help reqruit blacks to fight for the union to free their "brothers". I am not defending slavery but it was not just a Southern problem it was an American problem. The South seceeded for economic reasons because high tarriffs on agricultural products were taking money from the South and sending it up North. The slavery issue was drummed up when things were going badly for the North and Lincoln needed to fire people up.--Jack
