Front end popping

Check the rivets holding the front crossmember to the frame. This crossmember supports the engine and front suspension. It is very common for the rivets to loosen and allow the crossmember to move around. Have someone in the vehicle slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth while you closely watch where the crossmember meets the frame. I bet you'll see it move. While you're under there check the crossmember VERY closely for cracks around the bolt holes for the axle drop brackets. It's common for cracks to appear there as well. The fix is to have any cracks welded and to weld the crossmember to the frame. I had to have both problems fixed on my '95 F150, but it solved the same popping problem you described.
