1981 Bronco

Hi. I have recently bought my first bronco, there is play in the front left wheel it a 4x4 model with manual locking hubs. its probably the bearing ive taken the cap of the locking cylinder along with a thin spline and the spring behind and then a cir clip. i then removed the brake caliper. NOW WHAT! TRIED A FEW THINGS NOTHING is moving. any advice is welcome, i cant find a manual for the truck and ive never worked on 1 before but i am willing to learn. this is probably a simple bearing change but how do i get to it? and the locking hub complicates it.

thanks

Well it sounds like you have already removed everything down to the locknut on the spline. You will have 2 lock nuts on the spline....seperated by a washer. Get a spanner locknut wrench, ($12 at Autozone). And you can remove the first lock nut, the washer, then adjust the inner locknut to take some of the play out of the bearing. However, it could also be your bearing. Or your tie rod ends, or ball joints. Jack the wheel up in the air and grab it at top and bottom and see if you have some play. Thats for ball joints. side to side is for tie rod ends. OR you can have a buddy watch the tie rods as you crank the wheel back and forth while on the ground. Just a couple of starting places. Good luck

For a manual, go to your local auto parts store.....Chiltons or Haynes manuals run about $13.
Definately worth the money.

if you have been driving on a wheel bearig that has been loose for a while then you are going to have to replace the bearing. but everything else that billybob says sounds reasonably.

thanks for the info. ive sourced a manual now so once i get a locknut tool i'll strip it down. someone mentioned about the play, the play is exactly the same all the way round top to bottom and left to right, ive checked behind neither the trackrod ends or the ball joint seems to have play. i'll have a closer look later. am i right in saying that if the play is the same up/down left/right its probably going to be the bearing or raceways etc???

anyway thanks again for the info any more is welcome

Make sure you remove BOTH clips...there is one that is very visible and is on the end of the axle itself. There is another ring clip that is in the spindle, (Hub), on the outer side, about 1/4in from the edge of the hub. you will need 2 jewelers screwdrivers. When you find the ends, use one to get under the ring and lift it a bit, and the other to pull the end out. Its not a real strong ring so once you get the end out, you can pull it with your fingers. Here is a site that may help with locating that ring.

Its for changing ball joints but you can stop where you need.

had to put the thing back together for now untill i find a tool. one other thing, the stop screw inside the lock cover was missing when i took the thing apart does this serve any purpose apart from stopping the inner cog from popping out when u take the manual locking cover off or does it have another job

thanks

Keeps it from coming out too far. May not go in all they way and not engage, or not going in correctly and waste the hub.
