I did a search before posting, hoping im not the only one having problems with my PowerTrax Lock-Right. Im not in no way saying its a bad products.. its holding up great in my '89 F250 10.24 Sterling, with 4.56 and 35's BFMudTerain's. The problem i am having is that the locker wont lock. I know it rachets when i turn a corner.. but i had to use 4x4 to get out my driveway.. no snow. It just racheted.. one tire would spin once and awhile.. but times were that both werent turning at all! Now, your wondering, i said snow, i live in Northern BC, Canada.. and right now its -35c (-20'ish F). the locker has been installed by myself, everything went smoothly.. it was a tight fit, about.. 3 months ago. Now.. im wondering.. its never been this cold since i put it in.. would .. could it just be to cold? that its not allowing the springs to hold it together? i hope thats all it is.. I tried contacting Powertrax today, but no luck.. i dont know.. have any of you guys hasd the same problem? or have any suggestions?
Same problem here in the same exact axle. It was 20-30 below (F) around here a bunch of nights and mine would have a problem engaging. I believe that it is just the oil built up between the teeth on the locker. You put yours in too, so you obviously saw how shallow those teeth are. I think its just building up in there and it builds up a film that holds the sides away from the center pieces. Only solution i can think is try lighter oil, I'm running 90w140 so i know thats a lump in there. Also alot of synthetics are more uniform over diff. temps. Mine hasn't had a problem til at least 10-20 below zero so I haven't changed it yet. Too lazy, I just baby it til i get it moving and it seems to be fine after a mile or so. Good luck with it.
Ya, thats sorta what i was thinking. Cuz theres not alot to go wrong with it. I talked to powertrax today, and they suggested i take the cover off and inspect it. that maybe i installed it wrong.. to much of a gap between the drivers. But, theres no way i can make that gap smaller. You know what i mean, with those stupid lil washers we had to use that were under the old spider gears. theres not alot of meat in them. and if i recall correctly they were the only ones ford listed for my rearend. I dunno. Its only -25 today, so im going to go see if i can get outa my driveway. Thanks for the reply.
