I have a 2000 xlt with no steering stabilizer (I think thats what it) what does it do and do I realy need one. I beleive the brackets are there for it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-May-02 AT 05:00 PM (EST)]More or less, Steering stabilizers help dampen the effects of large tires and bad roads. Somtimes they hinder more than help, as they can mask bad suspension parts and pieces.
If you don't have one, you don't really need one, a lot of people that have them really don't need them, Heck , I really don't need them, but they look cool!!
I have a 2000 CC V-10 4X4 with a leveling lift. I run 35" tires. (I know I should have a larger lift than this, I am working on the wife)Yesterday was very intesting in my truck. Between 30 -45 MPH if I hit a bump (potholes, ralroad tracks etc.) The front end of the truck would start to shake violently witha left to right motion. I would have to come to a complete stop before the shaking would subside. I have the truck at the dealer now waiting to hear what the dealer thinks is wrong. I do not have a steering stabilizer. Would that help this problem at all? Anyone else have this happen on their truck?
Could Have been a few things !
Trackbar bushings !
no steering stabilizer
ball joints
spring bushings
shocks
those are things that could cause what you had happen.
let us know what the dealer wrenchers tell ya!

Murph, Forty is correct. Could be a number of those things but also could be the fact that you got oversized tires and no steering stabilizer.
I'd make sure that all your suspension and steering components are good to go and then go get yerself a nice aftermarket stabilizer.
What you DO NOT want to do is just slap on a stabilizer. It can mask problems.(listen to YETI! :-) ) Please, make sure that there are no problems first.
Got the truck back from the dealer last night. They said the track bar was extremely loose. Everything else looked fine. The dealer also recommended that I get a steering stabilizer. I am going shopping for one today. Thanks for all your help guys.
