distributor shorting
I am installing a remanufactured distributor. With the key on, the ballast resistor starts to smoke. I disconnected the points from the distributor and everything tests ok up to the points. As soon as I touch the points to the distributor, (or anything on the engine block), the system seems to short and the resistor starts smoking. All I did was take out the old distr. and put in the new one. Any ideas?

sounds like something in the new distributor is grounding to the housing. there is a insulator on the stud that the wire goes to and takes power inside to the points or the point spring or something on the points is touching the dist housing.
