Yellow Coolant ??'s

I know that the yellow coolant is some special FOMOCO thing. My question is, is the yellow coolant the same as the orange?? I thought that I read that it was not. I just picked up my truck from the dealer (oil change and tire rotation) and they didn't top it off. When I asked him too he wanted to put the orange in and I asked him if they were the same and he said that they were.

Never, ever, never, never, never put the orange coolant (OAT) in a North American made Ford vehicle. It is not compatible with gaskets, tanks, blocks, heads, or any other engine part. It is corrosive to the internals. The coolant you have is called Premium Gold. It is a long life coolant that is used in some Chrysler applications, as well as Mercedes, and a couple other European models. Havoline supreme duty is the same.

Did he actually put any of the orange stuff in your truck ? If so, I would take it back and make them flush the system and replace the antifreeze. According the FORDs own documentation these are not compatible and should not be mixed! http://www.plaudersmilies.de/rough/twak.gif

See the thread "Coolant for V-10" (http://www.ford-Trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID43/2.html)in the FTE "V10" Message Board and the Thread "Coolant in 2002 F250 Superduty v10" (https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/superduty/2478.html) in the FTE "Superduty and Heavyduty" message board - to make a long story short:
You CANNOT mix the red/orange stuff with the Gold

You can probably mix the Green stuff with the Gold but it is not recommended to do so for now (until Ford completes its compatability testing)

The Ford part number for the gallon jug of the Gold stuff is VC-7-A (VC-7-B in Oregon, VC-7-C for a 55 gallon drum of the stuff). I got a gallon at the local dealership for approx. $8.

Eventually, Ford is putting this stuff in all of their vehicles

Valvoline (Zerex) makes the Gold stuff for Ford

It should be available in stores in the near future

When your Ford parts dept says they never heard of such and try to sell you the green or the red/orange, refer them to the Ford Modified Vehicle Engineering Bulletin (QVM Bulletin) No. Q-79 dated February 18, 2002 and TSB 02-3-4 referenced by that bulletin.

Hope this helps.....

Gary M.

Yes he did put it in. Thanks for those article #'s though. I called and he said he would check into it and call me back. Within an hour he called back and said he read it, had a call into Ford, and to bring it in, in the morning. I am happy with that as I expected him to deny everything.

I have had two 2002 4X4 Lariat F250's PSD's this year. The first, kept it two months, 8800 miles, took a trip to Philly. Someone else admired it and stole it, haven't seen it since. The second truck, I still have it, has about 5300 miles to date. Both of my trucks reportedly had the "yellow coolant" the first one, it was yellow, now that I have read this posting I noticed the second is a darker gold. Same coolant? I recently had the the truck serviced in Texas, wonder if the FORD dealer "topped" the recovery tank with something. Maybe they just topped it off with straight 100% yellow no water making the net tank volume darker. Don't know, the truck was out of my sight ( I hate that ) Do you need to add the old periodic coolant additive / supplement if you have the yellow / gold?
My experience with the PSD's, before I bought one, was with my former employer. We had two, a 95 and a 97. Our construction crews ran them very hard, many drivers driving like they were running from the repo man. Both had almost 200K and were going strong when I left them. I bought a PSD intending it to last as long as two gas burners. Is expecting to get a relable 250K out of one unreasonable? Maybe I am just trying to justify the expense, well heck, my kids are grown and gone, got a good job, travel 1000 miles a week average, my current employer picks up the tab on my biz. travel.... and I JUST WANTED ONE
Hope no one minds the beginners questions, I have enjoyed reading the postings of those more experienced.

Thanks, Oneof6

Well I just dropped the truck off...he waited until I had given him the keys before he mentioned that they didn't even have any on hand and the parts guy was looking for it. It kind of has me wondering what that article say's or what it will do to the truck (since he was more than willing to flush the system and document everything for me).

Oneof6....I can't say for your truck, but mine was a yellow/gold color and he put in a few cups of orange and it left mine the yellow/gold color just darked. Just keep an eye on things and if anything happens you might have to try to prove that a dealership did it.

The darker gold color is from the anti-leak pellets put in the cooling system at the plant. Yes, I said anti-leak pellets. All Ford vehicles (and most other manufaturers) use anti leak pellets to seal micro scratches on machined surfaces.
You can flush and fill with the conventional green coolant. It is not a long-life like the G05, but it is a straight conversion. No internals on the powertrains were changed to accomodate the Yellow.

You do not need the coolant additive in the Gold Coolant. I believe it says that in the manual somewhere.
Aaron.
