powertrax locking diff

i have a 2002 ranger 4x4 and it does not have a posi rearend i work as a ford technician and know that the thorsen limited slips in the fx4 level 2 are a good unit but they are still pricey even with a parts discount i was just wondering if any one has used the powertrax unit and what kind of results they had with it

Use a lock-rite. A little grouchy around turns and stuff, but worth it's weight in gold off-road.

it has an 8.8 and the reason i want the powertrax is it bolts into the open carrier without having to reset the bearing backlash and preload

Well, your options for the 8.8 ar the

PowerTraxx lockright at ~$250
PowerTraxx NoSlip at ~ $399 (quieter and smoother than the above?)
Detroit EZ Locker at ~ 220-250

Maybe a Quick Loc designed by Detroit for Genuine Gear ~$180(?)

I strongly suggest you consider the Eaton ELocker ($536 including shipping) because it is stronger in the rear than any of the "Lunch Box" type lockers that would be subject to constant wear.

Yes, you would have to reset the gears but since you arent' regearing, the existing shims would get it close and there should be some people at work that could help you out.

Its selectable and its stronger and will wear better in a daily driver.

Just my .02.

I have the powertrax in my f150. I put it in for that very reason. Middle of winter and didn't want it to be down for more than a day. It was $425 at summit racing. I didn't need 4wheel drive after that with good tires. BUT, it shakes REALLY bad gassing it around corners. It will make the truck pull if the tires aren't the exacy same size and pressure. Also, My back tires are wearing faster than my fronts. If I had it to do all over again I would have found another rearend and bought a traclok and waited to have it set up.
