ok. the price for cable tv is going over the edge. well, its been insane for years.
we are thinking about getting Satellite tv soon, but everytime ive watched it at someones house, they lose reception everytime it snows, heavy rain, but that was a few years ago.
all i care for is comedy central, discovery channel, the HBO channels, outdoor channel. mtv somedays...
can i get all of your "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" towards the sattelite dish?
Dish gets thumbs up for me. Its got to be some serious thunderstorms outside for me to loose my signal. Dish Network always helps with tech advise too. Then again, I have no choice......no cable access out here.
Oh man satellite is awesome. If you get the dish dialed in perfect it takes a monsoon to lose reception. Cable will never compare in quality. I mounted my DirectTv dish 6 years ago and haven't fiddled with it since. I think I've lost reception maybe 5 times in 6 years. Thumbs up
we have Direct TV (satellite). its been great and like peppy and duderoy said, if u get it dialed in right itll take alot for you to loose reception. also at friends houses that have cable when u are flippin through the gide feature it seems to "lag" if u go too fast. same for flippin through the channels. never had that problem with satellite.
You can get covers for your dish that stops rain and snow from cutting off signals.Better programming with dish.I'll never have cable again.Go dish, you won't regret it.
I can't brag high enough on satellite I have the little dish and only in the worst rains pourdowns or snows do I lose signals, and by that time I usually lose power to my house, can't drive down the road etc., SO who would be watching tv anyway? I've heard all the comments against satellites by the local cable it is just because they can not even begin to give oyu as many channels for the money. As far as Installation, any idiot can install them ( I have many times). ASk someone local who owns one I am certain they will back my statements. CAble is a rip off for what you get.
All I can get is satellite. I got the small dish and wish I would have gone bigger. Snow and rain makes it cut out, but I am in the far north. You can't belive the angle. The dish is almost looking down. I am a lot happier with it than my wife. She gets really upset (with me-like it's my fault) when Law and Order blinks out. Oh well, that's my albatross.
Go with the dish, you won't be dissapointed. We had Direct TV a couple years ago and that thing would cut out if a bird flew in front of it, well not really, but it seemed like it. We have Dish Network now and it works flawlessly. With just the basics (Top 50) and HBO will be under $45 a month. Try doing that with cable.
The satellite covers are more of a scam than a help from what I have seen. Dad and I have been on alot of service calls where that was a factor in the low quality reception. Not to say that they don't work it's simply the fact that I wouldn't put one on mine. The best thing is to get them low enough that if you get a real sticky snow you can reach them with a broom to knock off the snow.
The rain fade is minimal if the dish is properly tuned. the picture quality is the same wether you have a 30% signal quality or a 100% but if any cloud comes over with the 30% your gonna lose reception.
I prefer the Dish Network. For a while we were selling alot of them for the fact that you could buy a compleat system with a High Definition Reciever, Dish and 40" RCA TV for $999.00. They also tend to get local channels on sooner than RCA/Direct TV.
Well I've been with cable (never again) then went with Dish network. Had some problems in dealing with them. I ended up cancelling the dish network and now have Direct. One little piece of advice, go with the monthly payments, if you pay annual and there is a slight adjustment then the problems start.
The amount is based on which programs you have. With me the Speed channel was absolute. Dish wanted additional and then stated that I could not get it...???? Everybody else in the area with the same network had it..Oh well, not my problem anymore.
You sometimes have to clean the snow off the dish itself- but snowstorms themselves never make me loose signal in Michigan.
Heavy thunderstorms will block the signal- usually for about 20 minutes. For this reason, I always keep a backup antenna or rabbit ears for tornado warnings so I can keep in touch with local channels.
You should be able to get free multi room installation as long as you sign a year contract.
I have nothing bad to say about satallite, have had it since it was a luxury back in the early 90's.
Picture quality on the satellite is better than any cable system I have ever seen, and I have had both direct TV and Dish and love them both. My only gripe is, having to ‘switch’ to the outside antennae for local service.
It would be nice if they would 'rig' a way to incorporate the outside antennae signal into the satellite receiver remote/box so that you could assign one of their unused channel numbers to include your local TV channel number, (i.e. local channel 10 would be '610' or local channel 31 would be channel '633' on the satellite remote). That would eliminate the hassle of switching to your outside antenna or trying to remember how to operate the TV remote.
