I have a 2002 Expedition with a 5.4 engine and A4WD. My problem is the altenator. It seems when it snows, and only when it snows, the altenator gets stuck. I can watch the lights dim in the dash panel and I could hear the belt squeeking (at idle). When I accelerate the squeek goes away and the charging system comes back within 3 to 10 seconds. I tried watching the pully and belt at home, but, of course, it didn't happen.
Has this ever happened to anyone? I am only afraid to take it to the dealership to have them tell me nothing is wrong. When it is not snowing, there is no problem. The weather forecast is going to be sunny and warm.
cablecam : Welcome to fte first of all, sounds like the volltage
regulator & the brushes are going bad, I would save you the pain
& just replace it, if you have some mechanical skills you should be able to do it in 30to45 min total time this is an easy swap.
keep us informed turbo ted
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know where I can find an altenator for my Expy with 180 amps? I have stereo equipment and things like that. It seems with the lights, wipers, both fans for heat, and the mirror heaters on, the system is a taxed. Do you think 180 would be to much or not enough?
You may want to check with some of the local stereo shops. They usually can order a 200 Amp + alternator from somewhere like Rockford Fosgate. You may also check with the parts stores in your area, they may surprise you.
Good luck on the fix! Let us know how it works out.
cablecam : Stick with the oe alternator your factory alternator will
have an output of 186to190amps with the whole system loaded
i work for autozone & have seen the best of the best come in orion, phenoixglod, rockford fosegate, etc & the heat will kill them all but if you want oe dependability go oe[original manufacturer]
now i am not putting down any of the previously mentioned
products ist just been my experience too see alot of them fail, afteryou replace the alternator have an arbs test run on it and with all of the acceories running peak amperage out put should be 188 or so, it did on my expy with a motorcraft alternator.
keep us informed & btw build a good relationship with the parts guys at your favorite ford dealer & you can get some smoking
deals on your parts.
