What kind of locks do you have? Do you feel comfortable disassembling them to see what is going on? They do break from time to time.

The factory ford lock outs suck (manual and auto ive broke a few of each) there are too many moving parts (gears and springs) I would recomed a set of Mile Markers or Warn Hubs they are a 20 min instal. Mine did the same thing and one of the gears got stuck

If you haven't used the hubs in a long while, everything in there will kind of seize up from lack of use. Try removing the hubs and cleaning them. Use something that will loosen up all the caked in gunk. Once clean, lubricate the hubs with oil and see if you can get them to function by hand so you can notice whether there are any "bad" parts that would warrant replacing the hubs. If the hubs check out ok, clean the old grease and crud out of the ends of the axle area where the hubs mount and put in new grease. Reassemble and go for a test drive to check out the whole axle assembly. You need to lock the front every so often and drive in four wheel drive to keep everything associated with the front axle properly lubed. If the hubs are crudded up to the point that they are non-functional, consider repacking the front bearings as well. Hope this will help.

BTW, the locking hubs require a very light coat of grease according to the manual, so don't glop on handfulls.

One other tip, not sure if it is true of your year but some(all?) of the 90s heavy dutys locking hub assembly is held in by lock nuts and more importantly and hard to see ... a inside C clip about the size of a piston ring. With grease on it is nearly impossible to see, but you can feel it about 1/2 inch into the wheel hub sitting in a groove on the inside of the hub. The locking hub appears to ride against that C clip. It can be removed with a screw driver or similar tool. If you have removed all the obvious parts and the hub still doesn't come out, I bet this is your problem, a C Clip.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
