Unhappy Wheels not Engaging

While in four wheel drive the right front & rear tires spin. The left side does not engage until the axels are warm. 88" F250 Gear lube is 85-140. The truck is used for snow plowing and stump grinding. I use the four wheel drive everyday. Any information to make it engauge immediately or work better?

Thanks
Bill

Let me see - as I understand it - only one front tire engages and both of the back when in 4WD. Evidently you have a rear Trak-lok diff and a factory open diff in the front...and all is normal.

However, if you have had a locker installed in the front, then the locker is bad.

Question: Will the left eventually spin if you get your truck into another postion and the right stop spinning.

Even with an open diff front, both will engage when the RPM's are up and if you are on soft ground.

Olny the right front and rigth rear spin when I am on soft ground or snow and ice. If I get the rpm up and the tires spin for a few minuts the left front and back start to spin. I have wached this happen in the mud when I have some one else drive and we are towing a pice of equipment. when all four tires are turning they keep turning. Also when the left front kicks in it it causes the truck to shake like it is grabing the ground hard. The hubs are new. The were put in two weeks ago and work fine. They are waren.

Thanks

It seems like maybe two things are happening:

(1) You have a Limited Slip diff that the clutches are bad
(2) Your diff was open to beging with

In any event, unless you (or someone else) has installed a locker in the front, your front diff is open (standard equipment).

1st - Check the tag on your rear diff. If it has an ID number like 3L54 for instance, your diff has the Limited Slip setup; if it has a number like 3 54, then it is open.

Again - all diffs in the front (unless modified or special ordered) are open from the factory.

If both diffs are open there is no quick or simple fix to get them to engage both axles.

If the diffs are limited slip and having trouble engaging, you may need to add the posi lube to get the clutches engaging. Also, sometimes pressing the brake a little while giving it gas can get the diff to hookup both tires.

I am going to change the lube this weekend. I plan on using a synthetic(sp). I did hit the brakes yesterday when I was plowing and it made the left weels kick in. The right front did stop turning when the left front started.

Thanks
