ok my 300 inline 6 on my 1980 f150 idles very low and shakes like crazy i seemed to smooth the shaking out with a tuneup.. however the idle will not adjust at all doesnt matter if u turn the screws they have no effect as if they arent there and when it idles low i get black smoke but when i hild the gas down a lil bit it stops smoking im lost i was told to junk my carb
CHECK FOR VACUM LEAKS, AROUND CARB. AND INTAKE. FILL A SPRAY BOTTLE WITH A FEW DROPS OF DISH DETERGENT AND WATER, SPRAY AROUND BASE OF CARB AND INTAKE TO HEAD. IF A CHANGE OF IDLE OCCURS WHILE SPRAYING, THAT'S WHERE THE VACUM LEAK IS. ALSO SPRAY ALL VACUM HOSES TO CHECK FOR LEAKS. CHECK CHOKE, MAKE SURE IT IS FULLY OPEN. THERE COULD BE MANY THINGS CAUSING LOW IDLE. THIS IS WHERE I'D START. ALSO CHECK PCV VALVE, REMOVE IT, IT SHOULD RATTLE WHEN YOU SHAKE IT.

FUEL PUMP
HEAT RISER VALVE
Why are you YELLING, mopar? And what's up with that handle, huh? Are you trying to tell us something? Please explain.
It almost sounds like either a stuck choke or a serious vaccum leak. If its a vaccum leak you should hear a hissing sound. This happened to me, and once i found and plugged the leak (one of them anyway) it seemed to fix the problem, but when te carb is a POS (like mine was) it didn't do to much. But check for vaccum leaks (hissing sound) and check the choke to.

Sounds like the intake/exhaust manifold bolts have worked loose...vacuum leak and possibly bad gasket (now). Try retorque of those (get a book for sequence) and you may get lucky. I have replaced the gaskets twice on my 83 "300" since I bought it ...actually 3 as I had to replace a cracked manifold immediately (got the truck pretty reasonable)and that required new gaskets.
I use anti-sieze on the bolts as I know I will be doing it again...and maybe in a few days. Darn manifold is heavy, FYI "stick" those new gaskets on w/cement if you have to go that far. Takes 2 hands (and arms) to move the manifold back in place so ya can't be bothered with slipping gaskets.
minus 30 in my back yard last week for those of you complaining about cold at 10 above!
