I just swapped in a duraspark II, do I still want my timing at 10 degrees? I thought I read something about it only being set at 6 degrees w/ the duraspark. Thanks in advance.
ALL 302 AND 351 (INCLUDING 351 4V H.O.) TIMING IS SET AT 10 DEGREES BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER THAT I'VE SEEN, FROM 1980-1991. WHEN ADDING AFTER MARKET IGNITIONS (JACOBS,MSD MALLORY ETC.) YOU USUALLY ADVANCE TIMING. I DON'T REMEMBER ANY FORD TRUCKS FROM 1979-1993 TO BE LESS THAN 8 DEGREES BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER.
You need to check your tags in your engine compartment for the " calibration code"..... There are some 302s in 1983 that are set at 6 degrees BTDC... for 1985-6 some are 8 and some are 10 degrees....
That code will be something like ' 5-51D-R00'..... post it and I will look up your numbers...
Maybe you need to look on the vehicle you took the DuraSpark from ?

I mentioned the 6 on the 1983 since it was asked about and Mopar said he had only seen the other setting... to give others a ' heads up ' that they need to look up in the book before assuming they should use the 10 degree setting....

more power and better fuel economy with 10 btdc or use 6 btdc like a professional mechanic.

GregoryB is correct on checking the numbers on engine first. This will ensure correct timing for each application, since there are different calibrations. But 10 degrees BTDC is a general specification and applys to most, (not all), and is a good starting point.

Gregory B is correct, since there are different calibrations. 10 degrees BTDC is the general setting on most applications, and is a good starting point. Remember, the question was for a non stock application!!!!!!! 10 BTDC is a good starting point. Advance Or retard timing as needing.
