My 95 7.3L smokes when I start it Ambient temp does not matter. I have noticed that the volt meter is low while it is smoking aswell. Then like a switch the smoke goes away and the volt meter registers much higher. Has anyone else notice any thing like this?
What you're describing is fairly normal. The voltmeter will register a low reading while the glow plugs are activated, which can be up to 1 1/2 minutes after starting the truck.
If the smoke you're describing is light blue in color, that's merely an indication that you're engine isn't warm enough yet to burn the fuel efficiently.
Since the smoking stops when the glow plugs stop cycling, I wouldn't worry about it.
Yeah mine does the same thing on occasion when its really cold. Light blue smoke on initial start up and by the time I get out of my development, it disappears (i.e. warmed up).
If it was just a small amount of smoke I won't be concerned. But it can fog up a fairley large area in short time. I would even say it billows blue is white smoke. I can not start it and run it in the shop even in the middle of summer. I do believe it is unburnt fuel though. It is a white smoke with a blue tint.
