Draining Front and Rear Diffs (probs)
Draining Front and Rear Diffs (probs)
Yeah, so I was gonna drain my front and rear diffs and I bought a couple (yes, a couple) gallons of gear oil for it, but yet, I can't find the drain plug.
filler plug is quite obvious, but no. NO FORD CAN'T MAKE A DRAIN PLUG OBVIOUS ENOUGH FOR US.
Anybody know where they are on a Dana 60 rear and a Dana 50 front?
I cant find em

I don't know about the front but there is no drain plug for the rear, you just take the cover off and let it drain. Try loosening all the bolts slightly then remove the bottom bolts and the gear oil should start draining, you might have to pull the cover out a little to get it started. After most of the oil drains you can remove the rest of the bolts and pull the cover all the way off. If I remember correctly ( I did mine a few years ago) there is no gasket between the cover and housing, I used the black RTV silicone sealer.
For the front, buy a suction gun at a parts store and suck the gear lube out of the differenial. You won't get every last drop out but, this should do it unless the lube is contaminated with water.
