i know its not a truck , but i already have a truck and really need something that will be better on gas mileage so i can get back and forth to college next year. i am looking at a 2000 vw passat v6 with the 5 speed. this car is sweeeet. 6 disc cd player leather interior , its a nice car , anyone here have a passat ? we already have a jetta and are more than satisfied with it , opinions?
I've never had a Passat, but I have driven a few of them. Passats are nice, except for the occasional quality glitches. Either you get a really really good one, or a really really bad one. They have very high resale value so getting a used one will cost you a pretty penny. They have very nice interiors with lots of features. My advice, save yourself some money and get a loaded Focus ZTS or ZX5, or get a Taurus. You can find those really cheap all over. If you are going to be in college, save your money and get something that isnt going to have a high cost of ownership. Not Vdubya's strong suit.
One of my Ex's had a 2000 Passat. It seemed like a nice car, good on gas mileage, reliable, drove nice. Probably not a bad choice. My Brother-in-law also has one and they love it. They do have nice interiors, cool guages and plenty of features.
I have also heard good things about the Ford Focus. A few of my coworkers have them and really like them. Another option to look into. I've never sat in one or seen one up close, so I can't offer an opinion on handling / features, etc.
I bought a new 2002 Passat and traded it after one year for a used expedition. Bad--Dashboard squeaks that the dealer never could fix. LCD display showing gas mileage etc replaced. Gas tank float replaced. I had the turbo which had a recall for coil packs. All parts are expensive. Good-- Very smooth ride. I'm 6'4" and had plenty of room. Averaged about 27 mpg with the turbo. There isn't a VW dealership in the town I moved to and I didn't trust the car enough without a dealership. The V6's don't get great gas mileage (of course better than a truck). There is an excellant website that has everything you ever wanted to know about the Passat. http://www.clubb5.com/
(B5 is the Passat body)
Passat- one of the nicest-driving cars out there, but you did say you were going to school. I'm assuming your last name is not Trump, right? So finances are a consideration? You've already received excellent advice: nice used Taurus or Focus (avoid a 2000 Focus) makes a lot more sense. When a Passat does need to be repaired, you'd better be sitting down, with the service manager standing by with the defribulator paddles. CLEAR!! Passats are just outrageously expensive to fix.
AGAIN reemeber YOU ARE the one that asked, They have very poor trade in value. My nephew's wife has one that is two yeras old and it is very close to worthless compared to what she paid new. Parts and Repairs are pricey VERY PRICEY.
In an accident make peace with GOD because it will fold like a campbells soup can.
Dealers around here EVEN the local VW ones are scarecto tell someone what a trade is worth.
Look at something more domestic or more proven to hold value like a Honda or Toyota if you are inclined to go with import brands
VW's in general tend to have maintenance problems. I know from consumer reports and two or three individuals that the Jetta works okay for a couple of years and then starts breaking. My dad had a Eurovan and had dozens of problems while the van was still under warranty, to say nothing of after the waranty was up. He said the worst part was dealing with VW of America, that they are basically nonresponsive to customer concerns. I'll never own another VW. (I had a '72 Super Beetle)
U could also look at the escort ZX2. Its a 4 banger that gets really great gas mileage, and its also pretty dang quick for a banger. I would check in on one of those as well.
