I am going to replace my (302) cracked block with another motor I found at a junk yard. It comes from a 80's van. The van motor is an automatic and my truck is a standard. Any pointers?
You may have to change exhaust manifolds to the 1's you have on the truck. Other than that just swap the flywheel from the motor in your truck to the motor out of the van. Everything else should bolt up nicely.
The oil pan may need to be swaped also because of clearnce with the moter supports. Van's have deeper oil pans than trucks. Also the dip stick may be in a different location

I had a 79 302 with an 83 or 84 flywheel on it and it vibrated like crazy.
I believe the change happened about the same time they started painting the engines grey.
I was going to mention this too but I couldn't remember specifics. If memory serves the 302s either have a 28 oz. weight or a 50 oz. weight. Not sure of the cut off year.
Also keep in mind, there is a pilot bushing in the center of the crank that is needed for manual trans - an auto trans motor won't have one. Just get a new one and drive it into the 'new' motor.
OK, so if I need the correctly balanced 84 flywheel for the 84 motor, can I use it with the standard trans or do I need to find an 84 flywheel from a standard trans?
a fly wheel will only work with a standard trans, so if you get the one for the 84 it will work. is it possible you are thinking flex plate and fly wheel are the same ?good luck, bob
