Anyone adapt an overhead compass/temp console from a Explorer or Mountaineer to the Ranger interior?
I saw a couple of them listed on E-Bay for $180.00 with supposedly simple install instructions included, but I do not understand hows it would mount to the Ranger roof liner for a factory look. I don't wish to "hack" my interior with a poor installation. If it would work, the console looks good and provides a custom look.
It has been done before. I myself have not did it yet, so this is not first hand experience. I know you need the following: An overhead console(of course), the mounting bracket, a temp. sensor for the temp. function, and a piece of the console wiring harness. There are probably a few more things, too. You will have to cut a hole in your headliner, and custom wire the console. Their are sites that have specific instructions(including wiring) out there, but I cannot recall any of them specifically. Maybe someone else could help you with that.
There have been several posts here on that. Scroll up to the top and click search. Then search for ranger overhead console or something like that. alot of them had links that will help you out and help you decide if it is worth the risk.
Wasilla,
I just installed one on my 99 Ranger XLT. Very easy.
Let me know if you have any problems but I found it to be very straight forward. The only variation I found is that I did not have a gray/black wire coming from the GEM for the VSS so I traced the VSS wire from the differential into the wiring harness in the cab and tapped into it there.
Wasilla,
For a 2000 Ranger, I think you will want an overhead console from a 1995-2001 Explorer or Mountaineer. They should fit the roof conture of your truck. $180.00 is awfully high. I got mine on E-bay for $55.00. Be sure the console you bid on has the mounting bracket and temperature sending unit and at least a short pigrail of the wiring harness.
Wasilla,
Check out my gallery and look at the interior pictures to see the overhead console. You do have to cut the headliner but if you do it well it looks factory!
