Hey, I've got an 86 f-150 with a 302 efi, 4 speed manual. I have a factory tach and haven't had it up past 3k rpm because it sound like the truck is screaming. I was just wondering where it redlines. Any help would be much appreciated.
My truck has the same combo. I know what you mean, it really roars when you get up there. At least you have the factory tach, and they seem accurate, so as long as you keep an eye on it she should make it to 5K without a problem. They arn't exactly built for speed anyway.
I baby mine and rarely shift over 3K, most of the time I shift lower then that, it really eats gas over 2500 rpms. And with mostly around town driving, my shift habits make the difference between getting gas once every week or once every 2 weeks!
ok, well, hey guys, i've had some tach problems, i bought and have a sunpro supertach II installed on my 84 f-250 with the 460,
i hooked it up and everything seems to work great.
there is a selector on the back of the tach to switch between 4-6-8 cylinders, when i leave the selector on 8, it seem to be a little inaccurate, like you can feel the floorboard vibrating and going 45 in 3rd gear, yet the tach reads 2700 rpm's, i find that hard to believe.
when the selector is on 6 cyl, it seems to be accurate, but i dont think it would be, i'm confused.....
i hooked the green wire up to the ignition coil where it says tach on the clip...a little assistance is needed, do i need to go buy a new tach and ditch the garbage sunpro?, the needle is smooth moving and it dosent seem to be a bad tach other than its misreadings...
Perhaps they gave you the wrong settings. both my sunpros work great. The have the settings on the 'net, just google for sunpro. The other thing is, you might have the tach upside down when you set the switches.
i have the same year and engine and the AOD tranny but i still shift manually from time to time i have had mine 4500-5000 b4, sounds like shes gunna blow and the temp shoots up fast even with my 4 core radiator. with mine my power range seems to be around 3000-3500 RPM and under full pedal she shifts right at 4000 RPM every time. the best shift point for your manual will be around there. usually with a stock V8 anything past that is just burning gas and makin noise
Redline is 5500. It will go to there believe me. I have had my truck (currently 351w, toploader 4sp & 3:1 gears but its getting a cleveland and 3.50:1 cogs) up there a few times but the power drops off around 5000rpm. the SBF with a good cam will rev to whatever you want it to but the motor should be built for it. As for the tach thing. My truck is the same as you describe yours when reving around the 3000 mark, and i have the factory tach too. (which i know is correct) These trucks are like that and with a BBF its gonna multiply that problem.
The motor will spin up quite far; but they quit making power at about 4000.
another factor is the cam & carb. I put a 500CFM 4bbl on my 300, (which before, it sounded like a rod was gonna blow at 3Gs), and you could run it up far enough it would self-destruct pretty quick, but the power dropped off at about 3500, but would still keep pulling to 4500.
