I've been to auctions before, but I haven't been able to bid, because you have to be 18 here to be a legal bidder.
I turned 18 almost 2 weeks ago, and yesterday I went to an estate auction, and got registered, got my number and went to view the stuff. I saw a Murray lawnmower, a Stihl Weedeater, a '89 Isuzu Pup truck, and some woodworking tools that I was interested in. Anyway, I got outbid on the lawnmower, I only wanted to give $150 for it, it sold for $375, a rip off, got outbid on the Stihl weedeater, it didn't run, but brought $35, I bid $15. I didn't bother bidding on the Pup truck, it went for $3200, I would only have given $1500 at the most for it, if I had been interested. But I did find a spreader there I liked, and I won it for $10.
So, I learned a little about how to be a more aggressive bidder, and how the auctioneer will put you and the other bidder on the spot if you are in a bid war.
You learned the most important things about auctions. If it's not a bargain, don't buy it; and don't get caught up in the excitement. Sure it's fun, but it shouldn't be gambling.
The best thing is to skip estate auctions and target estates sales before anyone gets there and go through all the "junk" before anyone else gets there. You will find some jewels that way.
