I have aquired a 1954 C500 with no bed.
I haven't located the engine markings yet.
It has a Fram PH 8 spin on oil filter and I don't think they were around in 1954.
Does anyone know when Ford started using this type of filter?
The engine is equiped with a generator lower pass front.
It sounds like a "Y" block engine. The Fram PH-8 filter has been around since the early 60s or so but the original "Y" blocks used a canister type filter but there is and was an adaptor available to convert it to a spin on filter. You probably have a 239 or a 272 engine or, it could be one of the MEL (HD) series engines.
The 239 Y Block was the only engine offered in that model. What is in it today will require getting dirty and getting the block ID.
When I bought my 54 F350 some 5 years ago it had the spin on adaptor on the original 239.
BTW, the Fram is the worst filter to use on a Y, they reduce the oil flow.
Motorcraft FL1A is excellent as is AC, Hastings.
After crunching thru the snow, scraping thru years of hardened sludge, spraying ice cold carb cleaner and wiping the area behind the valley cover by the distributor I was able to find the dreaded EVB raised and staring back at me.
Apparently my motor is in fact the one which Ford installed in the truck only to find even they didn't like it enough to use two years in a row. The aftermarket rebuild kits and parts available all seem to want to start after the TRUSTY? 239 y block.
Fortunately the engine seems to run good , strong and doesn't smoke. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will stay that way.
I take it that you mean EBV. That was used 54-5 in trucks.
That is the same as was in my 54 which was a one family ownership. I pulled it with 65K on it and it ran perfect, just underpowered and the 5.14 rear made it a bit of a chore on the highway.
Now has a mild 292. Been too busy last year to change the rear, besides the old 17" rubber is still good.
Cold? It was -14F here this AM. Might get up to 0 tomorrow.
