Hello everyone I have a 78 F250 The speedometer reading has been jumping all over yet the odometer seems to be working fine, can anyone tell me what can cause this? Thanks!
Either the cable is in need of lubrication or replacement or the driven gear has chipped or stripped some teeth. First, pull the instrument panel and get yourself a can of Tri FLow lubricant. Pull the internal part of the cable out and clean with a cloth. Make sure NOT to bend it in any way!!!
Spray some tri flow down the cable sheath and then coat the part that you pulled out with tri flow as you re-insert it into the sheath. If that was it, your jumping will be gone. If not, you will have to pull the speedo connector at the transmission and inspect the driven gear. If it has stripped teeth, you will need to acquire another.
I had the cable go bad which caused the speedometer to jump and the last time the head actually wore out(after 240,000) in my 79. Went to the junk yard and picked up a 100mph out of a old truck for 25.00 and it works great. I like the 100 much better than the old 85!
