Raer diff leak?? whats wrong??
i have a 2002 f150 with a 4.6 in it. today i noticed that the rear diff was leaking. it looks like it is comeing out of the center of the u joint. it looks like a stream of diff fluid coming out and drips. i was wondering what the problem was and how was it caused??

I think i have seen a TSB on this. I think that it required removing the pinnion yoke nut, and useing a sealant on the nut threds. Before you take the pinnion nut lose. I would remove the wheels and brake drums first, on both rear wheels. Remove the drive shaft from yoke after makeing a mark with a marker so it can be put back in the same location. Use a inch pound torque wrench on the pinnion nut to see how much torque it takes to turn the pinnion. Do slowly and repeat. You will need this value when you tighten the pinnion nut back. If you dont, you might get the crush washer to tight, or not tight enough, Bad thing. As you tighten the nut, it takes more torque to turn the pinnion nut with your torque wrench.

thanks, it is going to the dealer on monday weather permitting. this is the first time i have seen this on a newer ford truck. gets me wondering what caused it or if it was just a part failure or what happened. it has been leaking now for a little over a week or monger now i would say by looking at the dropps on the driveway.
