Hello. I own a 2000, F150 4X4. I've owned it for about 3 years now and have gotten used to the low mileage, noisy valves, etc. Currently I use the Ford recomended 5w30 oil. This is a lighter weight oil than I'm used to running. I would like to go heaver 10\30 or better. "But I'm kinda scared to. Has any one seen any problems running a heavier weight oil? Other than driving to work it's mostly used to pull my boat. Also I live in East TN. so the cold is not a major issue. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ed
A lot of guys on this forum run 10w30. I have always ran the 5w-30. I tried running 10w30 and did not really see any difference, so I stuck with the 5w30.
to use a good 10W30 oil. Im using it now in Indiana in a Bronco II, and I can tell you it is a lot colder than in the Vol state. It (might) help the noise issue, and will probably hold its viscosity better than the 5w30 you are working with. 10w30's have less polymer viscosity extenders, and I'm seeing some other people post better results for oils that have a less of those extenders. Also use a motorcraft filter on your next changes, it has a good silicone anti drainback valve which should help quiet'n your startups. Good luck. Im using 5w20 in my new F150, but after the warranty is up, its a steady diet of 10w30 from then on.
Also, there's one here in the 4.2 forum about a month or two back.
Personaly, I believe you can't go wrong with any of today's quality oils. There are variations from oil-to-oil, but most all seem to pass muster. I prefer Chevron 10W30, but take your pick, there are many to chose from.
