Angry multiple sensor codes

I have a 96 Ranger 4x4 w/ 3.0 automatic transmission. I'm having trouble with stalling issues. So I had a friend with a code reader and it came back that my O2 sensors, camshaft positioning sensor, and EGR valve as the code reasons. I'm sure I can handle the O2 and possibly the EGR. Should I leave the CPS to the pros? Or is this a DIY project? I have 3 O2 sensors...do I need to replace them all or just the ones in front of the cat?

thanks any input will help.

Welcome to FTE!

If you post the code numbers that your friend pulled, then we'd be better able to tell you which 02 sensors you should replace, if any. Keep in mind that often times an 02 sensor will throw a code, but the 02 sensor itself is fine, and something else needs to be addressed, such as a vacuum leak or fuel delivery problem.

Same with the EGR code ...maybe it's the EGR valve that needs to be cleaned or replaced, or maybe the sensor (DPFE) that controls the valve is shot ...a code number would help with the diagnosis.

As for the Camshaft Positon Sensor (CMP), it is a very simple fix. A couple of screws to remove, and an electrical connector to pop off. Haynes Manual has pretty good info on it.

I just replaced my CMP because the synchronizer shaft failed and wiped out the sensor. If the problem is just the sensor, it is a real easy fix. Just replace the plastic sensor. If the shaft has failed, you will need a special tool to align the new one with TDC on #1. When you remove the plastic sensor from the shaft (2 small screws and 1 electrical plug) look on top of the shaft to make sure there is a half round (looks like a "C") steel piece on the shaft. It is a weak point and will break off. If it did, it will also wipe out the magnet in the sensor. New shaft from Ford $125. New sensor from auto parts store $50. Tool $35. Good luck. The rest of the stuff is pretty easy.
