On my 79 F150 i just bought there is this metal tube whick leads from the intake that evenually goes to the smog pump i guess. It broke off right by the intake and is now just hanging there. Is this going to be detrimental to the truck in any way. It still runs the same, a little rough i guess, but im not sure its because of this. I dont know if i should leave it or just plug up the hole with something???
yes if i were you i would fix the tube if there is enough of the tube sticking out of the intake take a piece of rubber hose and conect the two back togather with it you sould notice that the motor runs smoother now because if it is the tube that i think it you are losing vacum with it broke
Oh sorry, its a 351m, i should have posted this in that previous post.
Well the tube is maybe a inch and a half or so in diameter and its connected to the intake near the front and the tube connects into some device which im unsure of, then it exits that and heads right down to the smog pump.
The smog pipe is a direct vacume source to the intake. It is common for it to rust out in the center of the pipe. The valve you see is a like a one way valve I think like how the egr valve works. You have to plug it at the intake or replace it because the engine will not run right leaving it broke. There is a pipe plug that fits great if you dont need the smog stuff.
That tube is the bottom part of the Thermactor AIR check valve. The check valve prevents exhaust backpressure from blowing hot exhaust gas up into the Thermactor bypass valve and pump.
If you leave the tube open, it is an underhood exhaust leak.
You can replace that part to restore AIR function, or just plug off the threaded hole in the manifold to stop the exhaust leak.
The check valve is still available from Ford dealers (Ford part #D7AZ-9A487-A, Motorcraft part #CX-103). You can get it from discount parts sources for about $33.
