a failing flywheel would give you a vibration at a certain engine speed in any gear and not just a certain mph. I would say something in the rear end or driveline, like Horton said. First thing to check on any speed related vibration is tire balance however. Don't make things more complicated than they really are.
I just had the tires balanced I have checked every other part of my driveline I suppose there could be a u-joint that seams ok that is bad I didnt take them all apart. I cant tell you the rpm the tach quit but it seams the vibration is there in all gears just seams worse in 5th around 40 up to maybe 50 then it is gone. Clutch will chatter some if I dont let it out quickly other then that I dont know what else it could be. But thanks for the oppinions.
Is the vibration in the steering wheel or just in the seat or does it vibrate everything? If it's just in the steering wheel don't worry about the engine because it'll be front end related, if it's in the whole truck then you have some cause to worry. I'm assuming the tire guys checked wheel bearings and tie rods and all the rest of the front end while they were at it. I would call them or check your paperwork very carefully to make sure though. If all that checks out a flywheel problem or a harmonic balancer problem could definitely be the cause.
On two very rare occassions, I`ve had a pinion yoke nut come lose and cause vibration, more at certain speeds. Wouldn`t hurt to check it. Could also be tranny or transfer case. Have you checked all of your fluid levels lately?
Lets see maint. in the last few months new brakes front and rear front wheel bearings repacked and readjusted. Rear axle rebuilt and all bearings replaced. All fluids changed New tires, All wheels rebalanced and checked for run out. Most of the work was done by myself I am a Mechanic so I know it was done right. So back to my original question what are the symtoms of a bad Duel mass flywheel? Can anyone please tell me? I think my plan is going to be pull the Trans out and check the clutch and I am sure replace it all but in the mean time...
An easy way to check is to remove the inspection cover and you will be able to rotate the flywheel surface with your hand. Bottom it out in 1 direction and mark the fw. Bottom it out in the other direction and measure the amount of free play. The specs are 5/8" min and 3/4" max. If above or below the dmfw is shot. I cast my vote for tires since it's speed related. I had a similar trouble at 30 mph on my 150.
I worked with my tire guy and we rotated tires and balanced them but the vibration continued. Finally, by roatating the tires we identifed 2 potential tires as the problem.
The tire shop then put them on their balance machine and ran some kind of pressure test balance. Can't remember what it was called just now but can find out if you need it. Anyway, the result was that we had to rotate the tires on the wheels (the machine told us how much). I'm pretty sure it was called indexing the tire. Took care of the vibration.
