Im restroing a 59 Galaxie(not a truck but this is the only decent classic vehichle restoration forum i can find) and the transmission went out just before i was going to lift the engine, so i decided im going to put a 390 from a 1970 Ford LTD in it and my dad thinks the ford-o-matic even if rebuilt would have to be driven gingerly with a 390 hooked up to it so we are going to put the C6 from the same car in it, but today we discovered the transmission fluid pan is 3 inches too long to fit in the galaxie and still able to put the cross member back on so im wondering
1) would a professionally rebuilt ford-o-matic be able to handle a 390 even if driven hard?
2) if not, what would be the best way to fix the fluid pan problem?
It sounds like the C6 trans is 3 inches longer then FOM trans? If so just relocate or modify the current c'member or try using the one out of the doner car or build a new one. Don't forget you may have to have a driveshaft made and you will need to modify trans shift linkage. Good luck with your project.
yes, the C6 is 3 inches to big. and that is what i was thinking too, but would that hurt the car's strength any moving the cross member back that far?, and yes i will have to get a Drive shaft made and tranny linkage, but those wont be too hard
No it won't hurt it at all. The c'mem position is setup by the eng position and the trans mounting pad. Different eng/trans combinations equal different c'mem location.
Will the 390 mount in the same postion that the Y block did? If not try hanging the engine in place with the fan installed and the radiator in place (keep at least 1 inch clearance to the rad no closer) then see how much clearance you have to the dash panel (fire wall) if you have a lot then move it till your happy. Now it's time to install the trans and see where the c'mem will end up.
The 390 is a bolt in since the FE was offered in 59. The tranny used on the 59 FE is the CruiesOMatic which is simply an updated Fordomatic and able to handle the FE torque.
The Cruiso & C6 were available the same years in the mid 60's so you might check around in boneyards to see if they used a common X member that might make an easier swap.
nah, im getting mine rebuilt by a guy my friend uses to rebuild trannies he puts his 454s(forgive him, he wasnt raised right and choses chevy) only 500-600 bucks and have it back in a week he said
and it really only has to last until i go to wyotech in october, cause then putting a c6 in would be much easier with all the stuff you need to custom fab right there
