Yes, the turbo is on all the time. If you dont hear it whistleing then it isn't working, if that is your question. Now the TURBO is Electronicly controlled, thus, the name EVRT. Whis stands for Electronic Variable Response Turbo. Depending on the stress on the drivetrain the turbo may give the engine more boost or air and fuel to keep the truck from bogging down. Hope that this helps................

Great question, great answer. I love learning on this site. If this continues I won't be able to wait till May to order the truck, have to order the dang thing sooner.
I have yet to get an answer on the turbo's of 2003. I was told and somewhere read that the turbo was changed in august of 2003 becuase of "lag" problems. Now i see that a new electronic turbo is introduced for 2004. Is this the same turbo or not ?
thanks, rimshoes.
I also had turbo problem, overboost problems 35-40psi between 2-3 shift, ford replaced they blamed it on my magna flow. New turbo works even great i don't know if its an o4 turbo?
don't know how to explain it, but when you stepped it down hard it wouldn't take all you was giving it and would back blow it out the air filter and make very weird noises and miss at the same time, dealer and rep. hadn't heard of this problem. They also show me a write up in there book where some of the 03-04 would make this sound this if you let off the throttle very quick.
This turbo was changed after 3 EGR valves, 2 mass air flow sensors and 2 mod. for the temp. control for oil and water, 2-3 flashes and not sure on what other mod. was replaced, haven't gotten paper work yet. also, "stock everything" mech. said don't change anything till these problems are done as they have been dropping the warrantys on some for changes being made.
50jd60-- My EGR valve went out last week. This (i hope), is not about the turbo gettin ready to take a dump is it? Did you quit havin problems with the other things after turbo replacement? I only had 3500 miles on it and the 2 flashes so far.
Have only put a couple hundred miles on it since they changed it, got exhaust smell about a week later but when I took it back to have it checked the smell had gone away and it hasn't been back. Can't answer your question for sure on the EGR but it never run like it did when new after they changed the first one, now it seems better then when I got it, altho the miliage is down some, might just be the cold weather here in western Pa. Down to 14.5 around the hills here, summer months 17-18 MPG. Got 14.5 last summer pulling a 14,000# 5th wheel camper out through Ohio, hope it comes back as we are going to a couple of car shows and tractor shows in western Ohio.
They also told me that between the mass air flow sensor and the turbo not being right was causing the EGR valve to carbon up, just telling you what they have told me, any comments are welcome on this.
