After two of the longest months in recent history, my F250 XLT finally arrived from the factory! Yee-haw! She's dark highland green, supercabbed, SWB, 6spd., V10, 4.30 axle ratio and I couldn't be happier. I haven't been able to resist juicing those rpm's every time I shift (the V10's music to my ears), but I have a feeling that after I fill up my tank a few times, I'll be driving a little more conservatively. What's the best way for manual trannies to maximize the MPG? What kind of shift patterns do you use? At what RPM's to you shift at for each gear? Do you use overdrive that often? What grade fuel do you use? Thanks for any tips.
Glad to hear your truck came in. Best of luck with it. I think the best advice for break in is to drive it the way you would on a day to day basis as if it were already broken in. It is important however during break in to vary the rpm range and not drive at the same rpm range all the time. I use overdrive all I can which is a lot easier to do with the 4.30s and the V-10. It doesn't lug that easily. Saves gas. As for shifting mine shifts best from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 at anywhere from 2500 to 3300 rpms. The higher gears shift easily at lower revs. I love the V-10 with the 6 spd and the 4.30 and I'm sure you're gonna love yours. Have fun

I usually shift mine around these same rpms in the lower gears then the speed limit catches up to me in the higher gears.I've got the 3.73's and it will still troll around in O/D at low speeds as long as you don't need much acceleration or HP.The V-10 does have low end grunt.I have been known to skip gears 1 to 3 to O/D.You just want a little more rpms when you shift.
If you are looking for the best fuel mileage there is an old saying, just drive like there is an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. The V-10 does get suprisingly good gas mileage. It will take around 3000mi. before you will see your expected mileage.Generally speaking, engines are thirstier until loosened up.
