HVAC control/system

Strange:

Driving home yesterday, I had the HVAC control one notch clockwise from off with the temp set cold. The air coming out of the vents felt like the AC was on (outside temp 80-85 F). I don't think the compressor was running. Is this normal?

Yep, it's normal. I guess it has something to do with the heater core running hot coolant through it whether you are using the heater or not. Someone named hutchinagusta at www.ford-diesel.com has the fix.

If it was indeed, one notch clockwise then I would have it checked. That position (face & foot) should activate the AC.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Jun-02 AT 12:24 PM (EST)]Let me clarify:

- The air coming out of the vents was very cold.

- On my SD the 'AC' positions are the 2 most counter-clockwise positions (Marked "AC" & "Max AC").

If the feet & face position is AC on also...is there any position that the AC does not come on (besides 'off')?

If this is true:

http://forums.ford-diesel.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB26&Number=711993&page=5 &view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

then the AC is almost always on unless the outside temp is below a certain level

Could this be true? Doesn't make sense to me.

a/c does not come on in the vent only position, and the feet only position. There is an explanation of why etc. in the manual. If your a/c is very cold in the other positions you are one of the lucky ones. If you don't mind doing it, please put your a/c on max on a hot day and take the temp of the air blowing out of your center left vent. Please post your temps here.

Thanks

I think I'm confusing every one...

I'm getting COLD air WITHOUT turning on the AC!

Jade97, You have not confused anyone. What they said is that the A/C will run in the panel and floor setting (first one to the right of off). As previously stated, the only setting the compressor does not operate in is floor only or panel only. The reason I suspect is that the AC and MAX AC forces air through the Panel (dash) only and if you want cold air at your feet set it to panel/floor. So.... if you want fresh outside air, use the dash or floor setting. BTW it took me about a month before I read the manual and figured it out but I was confused until then.

I checked the temp of my SD on an 82 degree sunny day with heat index of 91 at the time. Thermometer registered 35 stationary and all the way down to 31 moving. Since it didn't start snowing inside my truck, I'd say it was a little off, but not much. It was defenitely too cold to leave on high. How rough is that?

Ford for Ever is right. You aren't confusing anyone. I think that may have been my fault. I read your post incorrectly.

My reply should have been...Do not worry or fret. Everything is working as it should. That position does indeed activate the AC.

That is an VERY low temp compared to mine and the few others I have measured in person! Is there anyone else here that is getting these sorts of temps, (or anything below 40 degrees)?

Shepard,
I have an omega digital temperature meter ran the test with probe in the
driverside center register my temps ,today with outside temp 87 degrees
with the a/c in max,I had a low temp of 36 while moving, when stopped at lights it would rise to 41 degrees. It would freeze you out.
Granted I only have a supercab ,not a crewcab.

Rich

I have a probe in the driver's side vent also and saw 41 degrees yesterday with an outside temp of 89.
