the inlet where the breather is on my pcv is on the side of the airbox, right below the airfilter itself. when i first start up my truck and start to drive it a tannish sludge will flow through the hose that connects the driver side valve cover to the airbox, and fill the bottom of my airbox with it. it smells like gas, but i think that it is a mixture of gas and oil. because of the pcv setup this sludge then gets sucked up into my airfilter soaking it up. i recently put a new thermostat in and it helps my truck heat up to normal temp. and from what ive noticed it only does this when its cold. when its hot there is a vacume at the breather end like it is supposed to have. i put a new pcv valve in it and that didnt seem to help any. if anyone has had this problem or knows what to do to correct it please let me know. thanks!
I'm not sure about the 5.0, but the pcv valve on my 90 5.8 is in the back of the passenger side valve cover, right under the upper intake manifold. My truck was doing the same thing really bad. My motor was very tired, lots of blowby and I'm assuming leaky head gaskets or something internal cause I was losing coolant. I think the oily mess in the airbox is common on higher mileage motors. Short drives can also cause the milky looking oil because the engine doesn't stay hot long enough to evaporate the moisture in the motor. Watch your coolant.
i recently had a problem with a lot of blow by and my filter getting completly soaked with oil. turns out the angle connector on the back of the upper intake for the pcv valve was clogged with that oily brown stuff that just turned solid. you might be able to remove it without taking off the upper intake. but it might be a good idea to just remove the intake and clean out the throttle body, egr and iac cuse more than likely they are dirty as well. good luck
This is a problem with the PCV routing. Ford put it on the back of the intake, which causes the gases to go straight into the 8th cylinder, causing problems with that cylinder and giving crappy performance. Most people move the return to the top of the vac tree and see an improvement. Check out this thread for more info:
