A friend has a 92 Explorer 4.0 with 4wd. Right now both 4 hi and 4 lo lights are on and vehicle is stuck in 4wd. It would not go into 4wd at first but after contiuous pushing of buttons now both light are on and vehicle will not drop out of 4wd. While pushing the buttons I can see the volt gauge on the dash drop down to around 10 volts while holding the button down. Any help?
Not sure what they run in them, but my moms blazer just had the same problem. The relay was pulling, but the shift motor would not engage. Ended up replacing the shift motor.
well if it stuck in 4 low u have to have it in neutral to shift it out...otherwise try goin under the truck and smackin the motor that engages and disengags the 4wd...i ad one that was the same year and it did that sometimes..try it....it may save aggrivation and money...it looks likea window motor
This question would better address to Explorer forum, but I try to give my five cents on this matter.
Your friend would probably want to get the 4x4 switched off. The best way to do it is to remove transfer case shift motor and try to rotate t-case shaft manually. There are markings near this shaft saying 2H-4H-4L. Switch to 2H.
The reason for this breakdown is most likely the t-case shift motor failure. Looks like it stuck in between t-case positions.
It's not necessary to replace it, it repairs easily. In Explorer forum this issue is being disussed quite regularily. Unfortunately I don't remember the details. Must admit that my mechanic did the same repair on my Ex. It took not more than a hour and not much than 100 bucks in total (but the price is in Russia, not sure that the repair in US will cost the same).
