My truck has 35,700 fairly easy miles on it. When it gets icy I will throw it in 4 wheel drive to help get around town. Well, this winter I have been hearing strange squeeky noises (not real loud) when in 4WH and for a short time after switching back to 2wd. It doesn't seem to happen if I stop before switching it in and out, but if I do it on the fly, I get some really strange sounds coming from (i think) the transfer case. The owners manual says that shift-on-the-fly is okay up to 40 mph (going from memory on that) but I never do it while travelling over about 20 mpg.
Last weekend I switched to 4wd driving at about 20 mph heard a loud squeal followed by a brief gear lockup, decelerating the truck to about 10 mph in a heartbeat. I shifted back to 2wd and no problems. I thought I had really torn something up, and took it to the dealership who, after looking at it said (guess what) there is nothing wrong.
Has anyone experienced this kind of problem? I am wrong to be shifting in and out of 4wd while driving at low speed? You comments/ experiences would be appreciated. This is a time sensative issue since the truck is off warrenty very soon!
