I'm considering buying a F350, 2003. Should I get a 7.3 or 6.0?
There's some negative discussion about the 6.0, what do you think I should buy with an auto. trans ?
i cant speak for the 6.0, but i can for the 7.3. the 6.0 has been out for much less time then the 7.3 and youre right, sounds like there are a few problems. a 2002 7.3 i would think would be the best you could get. As for the trans, what are you going to be doing with the truck? city driving, highway driving, trailering, 4wheelin? Even though an auto may "tow more" according to the dealer, i would perfer the 6 spd anyday. Also, dealer says that a standard cab pulls more then a c/c. True. BUT a c/c (esp dually) will handle a heavy load better (imo)
I will use the f350 with a camper and/or small trailer/atvs. Mostly city and some mountain back roads driving in Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. I'm looking at a short bed ,c/c, fx4 , f350 with a 7.3.
I would stick with the 7.3 only because the 6.0 is so new and it take a couple of model years for ford to figure out all the bugs. But thats with any vehicle. Also the 6.0 uses a verable fin turbo to help regulate boost. I don't know how reliable it will be Only time will tell. If you get the long bed it has a larger fuel tank 38 Gal.
I have been wondering the same thing too. Almost bought a 6 L, but I found a nice 2001 7.3 L and fell in love... I haven't looked back since... and also saving a ton of money sweeten's the deal!
The 7.3L is sweet !!! Go for it! I also like the idea that the engine is time tested, and the are lots of them on the road.
I would go for the 7.3L personally, like people of mentioned the 6L has a few problems. Don't get my wrong, the 6L is a very good motor too, but from my personal experiances I would rather have the 7.3, they just never die.
I have a 2003 F-350 4X4 CC Dually w/8ft bed and 4.10 gears and I get about 12 to 14 mpg. If you get one with 3.73 gears you will obtain a little better fuel mileage. I hear the excursions get around 17-19 mpg.
The prior owner of mine claimed 20+ MPG when running empty. I don't doubt that at all... A friend of mine got in excess of 20+ MPG, his was a 2WD. I don't have enough time on mine yet to verify prior owner claims, still on my 1st tank! I'm tracking it though! But I have no reason to doubt the original owner's statement, since my gage is going down very slowly..., but as others have said don't calculate based upon the gage or rely upon the computer readout! Several tanks and a odometer is the best way. I think my manual hubs must help some. But, they've been locked in since it's snowed every day since I bought this Truck. How about others - Milage w/ 7.3 PSD?
I just went down the road your are about to travel. For the kind of money you're talkin about, I'd take the safe bet and get the 7.3L. I just bought a 2002 F250 SD Crew Cab/ 4X4 Off Road, Lariat, Auto w/ 15700 miles and it is a dream come true. I can't believe I had a gasser all these years. The 7.3 is tried and true and will not leave you guessing. I am getting 17 mpg overall everyday driving. Havn't had any road trips yet to calculate true hwy milage. Just make sure the truck is looked over real well and was maintained properly and you'll be a happy camper. I know I am. Good luck.

How's that Oil Guard working out for you? I just ordered one for my rig. Everything I've read and the peolpe I've spoke with tell me it will add years to my vehicle. How long have you had it and what is your drain interval? Did you install or have someone do it? How's that weather in Fallbrook? DC area just got dumped with snow. SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Time for that four wheel drive........
