I have read A LOT of BAD things about thornbirds...but let me ask this for an opinion, I have also heard a few good things and Ive come to this conclusion, want to see if you guys agree or disagree, My off-roading will be pretty light duty, Im not a hard core mud hole type person, that said I can live with Thornbirds not being a great mud tire, in exchange for them being a great tire on snow and ice, has anyone run them on their truck that can tell me about their snow and ice performance, that is what Im after, and if not, anyone have any general comments on any other tire that performs on snow and ice and at least moderately well to acceptable in the MELLOW mud (im not talking about 4 feet deep here)
I have 33 10.5 BFG MT's on an 83 diesel suburban we have (a know its not a ford but its cool none the less) and love em, but Im looking for something a little different for my truck
Well,
the thornburgs are a rock climbing tire. This is the reason behind the tread pattern, nobby sides with no huge gaps between tread. The cloaser the tread pattern the worse it will do in the mud. On snow and possibly ice a skinnier tire is what you will need. The skinnier tire runs deeper into the snow, instead of floating on top. I personally believe that a thornburg is not a mud tire, but it looks pretty cool. So i am not a big fan, but my buddy has a set of 38 x 14.50's he is about to try out so we shall see.
thornbirds are not a rock climbing tire, they suck
interco designed them to marketed as an "all terrain" which is about all it is, except they suck on the road, as well as off the road...they just "look cool"
yeah i put 33"s on a buddys jeep, and we tryed them out, and they do suck, but they do look really cool with there tread pattern. and i have talk around and i dont know who really has liked them. but with our tests on them we were in the sierra mountains here in california and went on rocks, dirt, street, and sand. they didnt do to bad in the sand, but they sliped to much on the rocks, we had to really air them down alot to get around, and they just dug some bad holes in the dirt and didnt want to get us out of where we were. but i have been around guys with the BF M/T's and they are a great tire for alot of things.
