Unhappy Starting Woes

I have a 1986 Ford (of course) F-250, diesel, 6.9 litre. I am having trouble starting it. I installed new and even with them I had to boost it. I did a load test on both and it stayed above 9. Please help. It is plugged in because it gets fairly cold here. This morning it was cranking then it stopped. Is my starter pooched, how do I tell if it is? Thanks.

I think you need new glow plugs and you probably need a starter you can only crank it over for about 30 secounds at a time. take the starter out if it will not crank and you have over 12volts at the starter and test it at a local auto parts store autozone,O'Riellys, etc.

have you checked your glow plug system?also check to see if you have power to the soleniod on the fender while cranking,if so then id go with the starter next.check all your connections and if there good pull the startter and have it tested.did you load test your batts with them unhooked from each other?to quote dave sponaugle,a good batt will mask the bad one.did it turn over fast then slow down,or just quit like someone turned the switch off?

You have to have the heavy duty batteries like the ones that came with the truck or heavier. Make sure the glow plug circuit is working and the glow plugs are ALL working. You should also make sure that you dont have a problem with fuel leaking back to the tank due to air leak in the return lines. If all of that is good to go, you should be having no problems starting the engine. Whoops ... you also want to make sure the fuel is NOT gelling by using a good anti gel additive. Good luck and keep us posted. Bill

Hard starting

My 86 was doing the same thing. I finally was stranded in a Wal-mart parking lot on Dec 23rd. I found a new starter at a local store for about $350 bucks and it has made a world of difference. The crank speed is at least 25% faster than before. I also plugged in new glow plugs last week and it is having no trouble tsrating up at 10 degrees below freezing point. You may also want to check your cables and clean both battery ends and the terminations any corrosion will give you reduced amps to roll over ther starter. Low power will kill a starter in no time.

3 weeks ago my started died 200 miles from home and I got a rebuilt starter at napa and it made a world of difference much faster and starts perfect. But it does get that cost in western oregon.
