Thumbs up 400 Timing Trouble

Hello. I am the proud owner of a 1978 F250 Crew Cab. I have had it for quite some time and have replaced the manifold and carb with edelbrock parts. I was told it has a RV cam in it, and ever since the swap, I can not get the timing right. Using the timing light, I have continued to try and set the timing with no luck. I carry a distributor wrench under my seat and mess with the timing 2-3 times a week. I am stuck.

Also, I am looking to put another transmission or something in my truck. It has a 400 in it and I drive it a lot on the highway, and am turning way too many RPM's with the 4.10 gears. Is there a good transmission that will replace the old 4 speed I have that is not cost prohibited? I have been looking in this section for about 2 hours to find some answers, but I am not having any luck.

Thanks,
CrewCab78

What is the actual problem with the timing? Does it change or move around? You might be chasing a vacuum leak from the manifold change.

Many more details are needed to online diagnose your timing issues.
For the high revs during highway drives, Check into the possibility of changing your ring and pinion gear set in the axle. You can lower the RPM range a lot cheaper than changing transmissions. Another tranny ain't gonna make that rear end give up the speed and lower the revs, not unless you have one custom built with some sort of overdrive installed. Then you are talking about mucho denero! You could also cheat and install taller tires on the setup you have now. Your low end torque will suffer some though.

It is very difficult and $$$ to get any significant change in rollout to offset those 4:10's with tires. Your best bet is to change the axle ratio. You can find much more information on axle/tranny swaps etc in the trans diff and axle forum. You can also find info in the 73-9 truck forum. This is the Cleveland family engine forum.
