Hello all, new to the forum here. I just picked up a '99 F-250 V10 to replace my Navajo (Explorer Sport) as my daily driver and have a question about the transmission. The shifts feel a little sloppy compared to the AL4D which I had put a shift kit on in the Navajo. Are there kits for the Super Duty tranny or would it be wiser to just buy the power programer that is supposed to be able to modify the shifts along with helping engine power?
I plan on hualing the Navajo on a trailer in and over the mountains here in Colorado to offroad events and want to give the tranny all the advantages I can. I have also learned from this forum that the 2000+ SD's have a water to oil cooler for the tranny, would this be an upgrade worth pursuing also? Thanks!
(p.s. Feel's good to drive a truck again after putting around in a Civic while building the Navajo!)
There are several methods avail to change transmission shifts. Electronic means and actual mechanical means. Electronicly, you can choose from Banks Trans Command, chips or programers. These mods are expensive and may require premium fuel.
Mechanicly, you can use a full shift kit like from Trans-Go or just a few pieces like valves and springs. Diablo makes an assortment of valves to increase shift firmness and quickness. Sonnax also makes a valve. There are also a set of springs called Tricumulator Springs that help too. Used together you can really get a neck snaping shift.
I had both the Sonnax and tri-springs and found the shift too harsh for my tastes. I'm only using the springs now. A good thing about the Diablo valve is that it comes in different sizes so you can choose the firmness you like. You can check out the springs here: http://www.techtranstool.com/ They also sell the Sonnax valve. You can call or e-mail them for good advice. Check here for info on the Sonnax: http://www.powerglide.com/
I really like my Bank's Transcommand. Unlike replacement valves or springs, it only works when you need it to and is easily by-passed for any diagnostic work.

I took mine to the dealer and paid for a half hour labor, they changed I think my pcm code. The shifts are very firm when on it. For thirty bucks I'm very happy. The tech said I had the softest setting.

More to come I'm sure.
I have the transcommand in a F-350 V10. It does everything they said it would. Even the part throttle shifts are 100% better. Easy to install, only one hour in your driveway.
