I just bought a 02 F-350 and couldn't figure out why it seemed to turn hard. I asked my dealer and they just told me I was probably turning it completely against the stops. I was washing it later and noticed that the hubs were in the locked position (apparently it came from the dealership this way). Can this damage anything ?? After I switched them to Auto it went away. Also is Auto the same as unlocked?? My manual doesn't show auto on their diagram, only l;ocked or unlocked?? Thanks
You didn't hurt anything unless one was locked and the other was not. You have the Elec. Shift on the Fly. In your case the hubs are locked by vacuum assist, or manually. If you shift to 4x4 on the fly, it takes a few revolutions of the tire to lock the hub and engage the 4x4. If you have locked the hubs, you can shift to 4x4 instantly. If you are stuck, and not in 4x4 you can get out, lock the hubs and go instantly to 4x4 (where the auto lock would not work because the wheels would not be turning). It is probably actually better to have them locked for the first few miles to get everything lubed up and broken in. Might cost you a bit of mileage at the worst.
(NOTE: This applies specifically to Electronic Shift On the Fly, you guys with the manual/lock-in hubs gotta do it the old fashioned way anyways.)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jul-02 AT 10:37 PM (EST)]It seems that all SD hubs are delivered from the factory in the locked position. The u-joints will bind a bit when turned all the way but it's no big deal unless the transfer case is in 4wd mode on pavement. It is a good idea to lock the hubs every few weeks or so for a day or two just to "exercise" them.
