I am going to add Ford factory fog lights to my 02 X ASAP. I was wondering if the fog lights can be installed using the existing light switch on the dash by pulling it out a notch or do I have to use the separate switch that comes with the kit?
Why not get a factory switch that includes the fog light function? Have you considered scouring your local salvage yards for Excursions, F250/350/450/550's that have the factory fog lights? Of course, the lights themselves are probably toast, but the dashboard switch should be OK.
The Super Duty light switch will not work on an Excursion.
The Explorers (new body style) and Expy's (old body style) will, however.
Adding aftermarket lights to the factory switch can be done but is a pain in the ***. If your ready for the pain, the go for it! I just wired mine with a relay and switched it off of the parking lights.
They were always one when the parking lights, low beams AND high beams were on. You can get relays that allow you to put a switch on. You can then wire it so that it'll come on like I explained above but with a defeat function. You can then position this switch discretely out of the way.
Some states, VA you can not have fog lights on with your brights.
I have lefted that state for good one year ago.
I get flashed all of the time with just my low beams on. I have taken it to the dealer and they say they are ajusted right, it is just everyone else oncoming don't like the bright light of the low beams, BUT i sure do.
Just replaced the stock fog light bulbs with Silvania SilverStar 9005's. You can definataly tell the difference between the 45W and the 65W.
At almost $19/bulb not cheap, but I think well worth the money. Had SilverStars in the Headlights for quite a while now, but the combo of both of them makes the night appear like daylight! (Well, depends on how much you drink! Just kidding!!!)
Looking for some help in replacing the stock foglights on my '04...I put Silverstars in the headlights no problem. For the fogs, I can't see how the bulbs come out. I removed the wiring harness, and attempted to rotate them loose, but they seemed REAL solid. The back of the lights to not match the diagram in the factory manual at all. I left for cross country trip the next day, so not a lot of time to fool with them.
Ummm - I say add a seperate switch and relay wired into the parking lamps. That's how I did it with Hella 550's. Much easier than trying to do a factory set up.
thE fog lamps ARE difficullt to turn...
but just make sure u have a good grip on something that is solid and Twist it about 1/4 turn counterclockwise (from the back) and it will come off...
just real tight !
Nothin' is as easy as it would first seem to be. Lot's of good advise here to go on. Just one thing: Be sure you know your local laws concerning fog lamps. Like kgglass wrote, most states now don't allow fog lamps to be on in conjunction with your brights. The one disadvantage to driving a monster like the 'X' is that it isn't hard for the copper's to pick out of a crowd GOOD LUCK!
