Brien brings up some good points. However, you can file for "S" status as a corporation and not have to deal with as many tax issues. My wife just incorporated her candle-making business. Wasn't as complex as I thought, but you'll need an attorney & qualified tax accountant.
BTW, I feel your distress. Although WCOM sold my dept. off to EDS a couple of years ago, if you guys aren't out there, we won't be needed. So, the 16,000 unemployment number will actually be a lot higher when you consider the contractors that'll also be let go.
I have found out all that stuff in my research to start my own business. It can be very rewarding, but at the same time it is very difficult and there is a lot to remember.

Well I do today. I was trying to hold out till they laid me off so I could get a little extra money. HA HA HA
This is realy not good at all. Needless to say I did sleep well at all last night.
One other important factor about being self-employed that all others have forgotten-the deadbeat customer. You will have people hire you, and then not pay. Last year alone I lost $14,000.00 due to my customers filing for bankruptcy. You can hire all the collection agencies in the world, but even they can't get blood out of a rock. Just be careful who you do business with, and don't extend too much credit.
Hey Odie,
I thought of another name for your potential Landscaping Business about an hour ago thinking your wife thought the other was too long.
Here is a logo I dreamed up for the business.
The T.L.C. Services could stand for :
Taking Loving Care Services
Total Loving Care Services
Total Lawn Care Services
Total Landscaping Care Services
Terrific Lawn Care Services
Terrific Landscaping Care Services
Just to name a few.
Tell what you think.
It came out a little fuzzy going through the scanner, but you should get the idea.
Enduringexplorer: You are wise to point this out. I have an attorney hired right now to collect $6000.00 that a outfit in Cleveland is trying to steal from me. Unless a individual or company declares bankruptcy, you mostly can get judgements against deadbeats.
You will have to pay a collection attorney 10% and be sure to have contracts! In the landscaping business, one can use a mechanics lien against deadbeats. Just be sure to have an attorney file it and do it within the stated period of time as required by law. Very good point enduringexplorer! F-3 Brien
Go For It!! While I'm not in the same boat exactly, I have a job and tired of busting my hump and getting nothing for it. I am starting my own landscaping/turf management business in Denver. Suburban Surroundings for those who hate doing that type of work in Denver.(shameless plug) hehe. Yeah, make sure you are registered with the state you are doing business in, get associated with the PLCAA, and get insured before you step foot on a job. Just some simple steps to take since you want to make sure you are a "cut" above the rest of the landscape companies in your area. Get a website to help advertise/educate your clients and potential clients as well. I'd point you to mine but it is under construction at the moment. Landscape companies are good due to the relatively low start up expense and potential for growth if you do a great job. Good Luck
