Coolant Check
Coolant Check
I bought a 2000 F250 PSD used from a dealer a week and a half ago. The coolant looks brand new, but I could not be sure they added the SCA additives. I also did not want to drain and flush perfectly good coolant if I did not have to. I bought the Fleetguard three way test strips off of the internet.
Last night I tested the coolant, I was very surprised at my findings. The truck is only good to -10 degrees, and there were no SCAs present. I am sure glad I spent the $8.00 for the test strips.

Those test strips are the 'truth teller'. I got mine at the local international dealer for free when I bought my DCA and fuel filter, just fyi. Still trying to figure out how much DCA to add just to get my number up a little, I am little below 2 right now.

Hey Guys!
Hopefully this will help...
The target numbers we look for (2.5 - 3) are "unit of SCA per gallon of coolant"
So given the following:
'97 PSD has cooling system capacity of 6 gallons...
The pint bottle of DCA4 or Ford FW-16 contain 5 units...
Adding one bottle into the 6 gallon system will raise the "number" by:
5 units/6 gal = increase of .83
Therefore in a 6 gallon system with no SCA, three (16 oz.) bottles of SCA will bring ya right there... 15 units/6 gal.= 2.5
-or-
Three and a half bottles in a 6 gallon system... 17.5/6=2.9
HDMustF250,
I don't know the capacity of your newer truck's system...
Hope it helps!
God Bless,
TC
