rough idle

rough idle
recently noticing a weird idle problem on my 96 xlt explorer. its 4wd and has the 4.0 OHV engine. when i start it in the cold morning, it idles fine. however if i start it in a parking lot after its been sitting for a small amount of time, it will idle low, rough, and act like its going to stall out. if i give it some gas and keep it above 900rpm its fine. im rather perplexed and being that this is my first truely computerized car, i dont know where to start. any ideas?

Look for messages that deal with IAC idle air controller. The first one in this forum has great suggestions for checking the IAC. I have 98 SOHC 4.0 Explorer that had idle problem only on cold days (below say 45) and it was the lower intake manifold o- rings. I suspect that your is more of the IAC, either dirty or in need of replacement. Next thought would be to check the MAF and clean it.

How long have you had your explorer? Check the oil in it. If your up to have an oil change, run a quart of Marvels Mystery oil through it to clean it out. Check the fuel filter and change that if it's been a while. My 91 ranger has had some troubles like this too and I ran a tank of gas with some injector cleaner through it a few times.
