I posted last week concerning a problem I had with what seems to be an issue in the front diff of my '00 EB. Thank you all for the informative responses. I had some work done on it that required changing the rear diff fluid. I found the receipt, and found that there were no charges for Friction Modifier, meaning none was added. The mechanic did use synthetic gear lube. I have confirmed that i do indeed have LS (axle code H6) Rather than bump my old post, I wanted to start a new one to ask a couple of stupid questions:
Friction Modifier -- Just at FORD, or will any work? Can I find a friction modifier that meets FORD specs at any auto parts store? I have what is labeled as a rear diff additive for LS for my Corvette. Will that work? If so, how much do I need to add?
When I do add the Friction Modifier, Is it ok to add it AFTER the gear lube, or should I drain the diff, add the friction modifier, then refill the fluid? All the posts i see referencing this say to add the friction modifier first, and I want to know just how important this is.
Drain enough diff fluid to ensure that all of the modifier can be added. The point of introducing the modifier into an empty differential is that it's a foolproof method to ensure that the required amount of modifier can be added before the diff is filled to capacity.
I would be conservative and buy the Ford-recommended modifier.
If you buy it from Ford be sure to get the friction modifier for synthetic oil as they also have one for regular oil. It will say so in the small print. I have seen a parts guy bring the wrong one out.
